Dock Street, Leith

Living room, Dock Street Leith

This modern two bedroom serviced accommodation on Dock Street Leith is located in a former church. There is also a kilt store just across the street. It is a favourite spot for many American tourists, the property manager told me. It is also conveniently located. Rather close to Ocean Terminal shopping mall and cinemas, the Royal Yacht Britannia, and the Leith Shore area with its many pubs and restaurants. The city centre is only about twenty minutes away by public transport.

I photographed this Dock Street Leith property on a sunny day. The sun was on the other side of the building so it wasn’t directly shining in the flat, which is the situation I prefer. When the sun rays get directly into the property, they can create some unappealing shadows. Not that shadows are necessarily bad, it is just that I can’t control where they fall. And they may fall precisely where I don’t want them.

It takes me about an hour and a half to photograph such a two bedroom flat. The time spent in post-production depends on the number of images with windows in the frame. For such pictures, I have to blend multiple exposures in Photoshop to avoid blown highlights and get a proper exposure for the inside of the property. I do this manually rather than with HDR (High Dynamic Range) software because in my opinion the results look more natural.
