I photographed this two bedroom serviced accommodation on Wester Coates Road, West End for Edinburgh Flats. It is located in the West End of Edinburgh, an area of town with many attractions. To name a few, the Edinburgh Gin distillery, St Mary’s Cathedral (cathedral of the Scottish Episcopal Church), the Royal Lyceum Theatre, the Georgian House (restored to show a typical Edinburgh New Town house of the late 18th and early 19th century), and the Traverse Theatre.
This two bedroom serviced accommodation is a stylish property, with a shades of grey colour palette. It proved to be a serious challenge to photograph on this sunny day. As it is a ground floor property, it turned out a good deal of the light coming in was bouncing off the grass. In the process it picked up a green/yellow colour that gave the walls of this flat a less than appealing look. Our brains are pretty good at eliminating such colour casts, but the digital camera is very objective in this regard and records the colours as they are. The effect was strong enough that I could even see it with my naked eye.
I since talked to an interior designer about this. She told me most people don’t take into account the colour of the environment when designing a space, something a professional interior designer always does. In the case of the serviced accommodation described in this blog post, a colour neutral palette should have been avoided in favour of one more tolerant of the bounced light.
Nevertheless, after correcting for all of these problems in post-production, this neutral palette looks very nice.
