Nicolson Street, Newington

I photographed this beautifully renovated single bedroom property on Nicolson Street, Newington for Southside Property Management. Not only do they manage this flat, they actually own it. As a letting agent, it would make economic sense to spend money on professional photography for properties you own.

I like to show properties the way they look with natural light, and have no blown out details in my photographs. One cannot typically achieve this with a single exposure if there is a window in the frame. The outside is so much brighter than the inside that even modern cameras cannot handle this difference. The pictures you see in my portfolio and in these blog posts are most likely a blend of several exposures. While there exists software to do this automatically, I prefer to do this manually for a more natural result. The HDR (High Dynamic Range) images rendered by the software can have a non-natural feel I don’t particularly like.

I also don’t like to switch the lights on during the day. Most people don’t live this way, and one shouldn’t need to have the lights on in the early afternoon if the property was designed properly. In my opinion, it looks fake and create light sources with different colour temperatures (tungsten vs daylight) that can introduce nasty colour casts in the photographs. You may not see these colour casts with your eyes, because our brains do an incredible image processing job. But the digital camera just sees the world as is and the different light colours make it difficult to choose a proper white balance to keep the image colour neutral.
